New this week . . .

Here is the final step of my Ebay shop overhaul.  I’ve been wanting to hire a real proper model for the store for this whole summer, and when my photographer friend Jamie told me about Sarah I knew she’d be perfect.  Not only does she love fashion and have adorable personal style, but she likes really good music (helpful on a photoshoot!), is a ton of fun, and has Rita Hayworth hair.

I got so tired of seeing photo after photo of myself in the store, and I can’t tell you how happy I am with the way these pictures turned out.  Thank you, Sarah, Jamie, and Drew for your help!  (Drew also made the new store graphics though he’ll probably tell me not to write that)

Otherwise everything else in the store should be the same.  As always, you can get to the auctions by clicking on the descriptions below.

Hope you like it!

1. 1960s green floral mini dress,  2. Star print mini dress,  3. 1970s paisley ascot dress,  4. 1960s blue plaid mini dress,   5. Laura Ashley floral sun dress

6. Pale pink floral print dress,  7. 1980s black polka dot button-up,  8. 1990s black floral print mini dress,  9. 1960s fuchsia floral print wiggle dress,  10. 1950s blue plaid day dress with rhinestone buttons.

11. 1990s floral print mini dress,  12. 1970s white button-up and 1990s floral skirt,  13. 1960s swiss dot peter pan dress, 14. 1990s floral ruffle blouse and safari pleated shorts,  15. 1990s black floral mini dress, 16. Navy and cream paisley skirt.

I’ll admit my first reaction was “Change? No!” But it took all of about two seconds for her to win me over. She’s too adorable! And I freakin’ want #11!

Sarah is really beautiful, and I am soo jealous of her hair, but I think that the reason I love your clothes so much is because of the way you wear them. You have such a uniquely beautiful face that it just brings life to even the dullest pieces. Sarah wears them beautifully too, I just feel that you are much too model-like to need a model to sell your clothes. That being said, I wish Sarah the best of luck. Her pictures are stunning. Numbers 1, 10, and 13 are really pretty <3

Summar, thank you, that’s the nicest thing! I’ve got the worst ever insecurities about my face, and I just would cringe whenever I saw it 20 times in a row in those New This Week posts . . . But that means a ton that you’d take the time to write that, really!

Sweaty, you have a gorgeous face. I know that insecurities are hard to get over, but a lot of people envy you. You are so kind an pretty and stylish. We judge ourselves so harshly because our bodies are the only real things that belong to us. We can change our homes, clothes, and shoes, but our bodies will always be. That is why the hair and make-up industries thrive. I, just like you, do not particularly enjoy seeing pictures of myself, so I understand where you are coming from.

Oh no! I will definitely miss you modeling the clothing! Sarah is stunning, but I just loved seeing how you would style each piece on yourself. The shop looks very lovely though, I absolutely love the ethereal/dreamy feel!

Aww, thank you, but I just got sick of taking my own photos and wanted to try styling the clothes on someone else. :)

That girl needs to get a style blog, immediately- she’s gorgeous. Her hair is indeed amazing and she’s so cute and sassy in the photos. I also like the dreamy quality they have. I am loving all the upgrades you are doing with your blog then the store. They are both better than ever!

I’m going to miss your ‘modeling’ though. :)

Actually now that I look again, she has a certain way of wearing the clothes (and your clothes have such a distinctive style!) That she carries on the liebemarlene style pretty fluidly. Wonderful!

If it ain’t broke (and it wasn’t), don’t fix it!

Sarah’s lovely, but she’s selling fashion; you’re selling vintage clothes for income, and are a better model for that.

And your face is every bit as lovely as your sister’s!

Rhiannon, I made a decent living selling used clothes for many years. It took 7-8 years before I understood what my job was.

My job was not to sell what I had, my job was to have what they wanted to buy. Big difference ‘tween the two.

    Sincere Good Luck!

    • Posted July 30, 2010 at 8:08 am | Permalink

Thanks, Lesle! I think I was an OK model for what I did, but I guess I just got tired of the old set-up and wanted something completely new. This spring I got really really burnt out on blogging/vintage selling/the whole thing and I had to change it up or quit.

So for now I think I like having a change and getting to be behind the camera instead of in front of it. I’m not saying I won’t go back to modeling the stuff, but now I like this way better. :)

Also thanks so much for your compliment! I’ve got such issues about my looks, but I always have. But really I think that getting a model was something I did out of needing some change for my shop more than anything else.

  19. Posted July 29, 2010 at 11:39 pm | Permalink

While I don’t think you needed a model- I thought you were doing a fantastic job yourself – Sarah’s doing a great job! She’s gorgeous (and that hair! good God!) and seems to have the right “style” for the clothes.
This week’s look similar to the looks you’ve been sharing from New Zealand lately, too.

  20. Posted July 29, 2010 at 11:53 pm | Permalink

I love the new look, the pics look great and although i’m going to miss seeing you modelling the clothes in the store i can understand that it’s far easier to take pics of somebody rather than trying to take pictures of yourself with a timer etc. Good luck with all the new listings, i am a bit tempted by a few but the $/ £ exchange rate is sadly not in my favour!

    Posted July 30, 2010 at 2:46 am | Permalink

she’s cute for sure, but the poses and the haziness on some of the shots make it a little more difficult to see what the clothes look like. i liked your more straightforward shots! i think these would be good in a spread in a magazine, for instance, but for people who need to see the details of something online before they buy, i prefer the old way. also along the same lines, she has gorgeous hair but it’s covering too much of the clothing. sorry, don’t mean to be negative! i love your shop/blog and wish you best of luck!

    • Posted July 30, 2010 at 8:10 am | Permalink

Sorry about that, Laura! I’m still getting used to taking photos. Some of these were hazed up for the blog and are lots clearer in the actual listings . . . I know what you mean, though! I need to start including some more fabric close-ups too.

  24. Posted July 30, 2010 at 2:48 am | Permalink

Awww such a shame you wont be modelling the clothes anymore, I think that was probably one of the reasons your clothes sell so well it because you looked perfect in every single piece.
Not to say your model isnt completely gorgeous too :) her hair is just perfect and I love that first photo!

Aw, I love the model and the new layout and the beautiful hazy photos. You’re obviously a gorgeous and fitting model for your clothes but I think change is so good and I have to remind myself of that every day because I’m always someone who is totally reactionary and wants everything to stay the same and I get frightened when something suddenly changes. This is probably way too much of a reaction for your nice post, but I thought about how it’s scary to make a big change and how I really admire all the new changes you’ve been making to your blog and your store!

Jenny, no way, I know exactly what you mean! I’ve been thinking about going this route with my store for forever but I was too afraid, and it seems so scary and overwhelming, but once you finally take a step it’s lots easier. I’m so glad you like the new store/blog look though!

  36. Posted July 30, 2010 at 7:59 am | Permalink

I think this is a neat concept, but I have to say I agree with commenters Laura & Lesl — it seems like you’re taking your shop in a different direction — it’s hard to see what you’re actually getting when a tall, gorgeous MODEL is wearing the second hand/vintage clothes (not that you arent every bit as pretty as Sarah W., but you’re a normal person, not a model).

However, I admire you for making changes — I know that can be scary sometimes.

    • Posted July 30, 2010 at 8:27 am | Permalink

Lexie, honestly I think I am trying to take the shop in a different direction. I’ve been modeling them myself for almost 4 years now and I just had to make a change. :)

I’ll try to include some more close-ups of the items so you can see them better. I really do want the photos to be clear, and I promise I won’t over-style so that you can’t even see the piece anymore (that’s my professional vintage store pet peeve).

While others have perhaps beat this point into the ground, I feel obligated to comment as well. I am all for this change – your site looks gorgeous and fits the mood of your blog and store beautifully, each new post has been fantastic, and the new clothes this week make up in their quality for the lack of quantity lately. But it would be very sad if this were the end of your modeling for the store. I was drawn to your clothes and this blog as a whole because of your voice, image, and aesthetic – heck, your overall presentation of yourself as an individual. I think you’re very beautiful (don’t take this weirdly, but maybe even the most beautiful person I’ve ever seen), and individualistic, and have done a great job with this project as a whole. It is only fitting if, at times, you are the one participating in modeling too. And I’m really going to miss your excellent poses and wandering camera eyes.

  43. Posted July 30, 2010 at 4:22 pm | Permalink

I am about to check out the store, and I’m quite excited! Congratulations on the overhaul, though, like everyone else has said, I will miss your modeling, so please come back and do a guest catalogue once in a while or something! Congratulations on the new blog and shop, it all looks so pretty! think you definitely didn’t need a model, you look absolutely beautiful in all your pics! Sarah is lovely though and think she does justice to your style and aesthetics. I’ve just started selling vintage part time in Holland, at first I didn’t wear the things myself, was really insecure and worried people would think that I thought I could be a model. but then realised that girls actually wanted to see someone like them wearing the pieces. Sarah is absolutely stunning but she does have that next door girl look that I think really appeals to a lot of people. ooh it also looks very Australian / New Zealand style to me for some reason… as an Australian girl I wonder if you’ve been on holiday to Australia before? think you’d absolutely love the style, pretty Victorian houses in Melbourne, the saturday markets in Sydney…
looking forward to your blog outfit posts too!

Heidi, thanks a lot for your nice comment! Well I went to your blog and don’t see why you ever were afraid of modeling your own things . . . you’re adorable! But I have the same issue with modeling my stuff and being afraid that people will think I’m trying to be all model-y; I think that’s a big part of it!

Also I’ve never been to New Zealand or Australia but right now i’m so hooked on those sorts of collections, so I’m sure I’m getting styling ideas from them unconsciously. Seriously, I think Australian style is right up my alley. My favorite favorite fashion label is Lover!
