While I was planning for our trip I was checking Weather.com obsessively each day to see what the temperatures would be in every place we visited, and 60 degree forecasts got me excited about fall-style outfit packing. So basically I packed tights and sweaters and boots, only to get to San Francisco to be greeted by a freak heatwave. More on that tomorrow.
So I ended up wearing the couple of sun dresses I brought over and over again, and I also ended up looking to Australian labels for spring/summer inspiration once more. If I could have magically packed a few skirts and dresses from Sydney label Secret Squirrel’s new collection my California wardrobe would have been lots more exciting; those mini dresses and silk blouses and perfect long skirts? I wore a silk blouse and long skirt when I went to LA–I thought it was a great outfit until I saw the tourist photos. I still have to learn the trick of making long skirt outfits look all right, but at least this collection gives me some hope.

I’m finally back from California and I’m finally posting about it. Honestly I planned to write about things as they happened, but when I was away, blogging and fashion and keeping up with the blog world were the last things on my mind, and I’m kind of glad I took a break, because it made coming back to Atlanta and regular internet access and all the blog posts I missed out on extra fun, and now I’m ready to get back into things.
Starting out with vacation blog posting. The first place we went to on our trip to California was Napa Valley, which honestly was a place I wasn’t expecting much out of. I heard it was beautiful, but then I heard it was a lazy place for drinking wine and eating fancy food, and I don’t love wine (I’m still learning) and I’m not too fancy. But when we met up with Josie and her boyfriend Josh a few months back they talked up Napa so much that we had to visit, and I’m glad we did because it’s a gorgeous place. And lazy, but in the best way possible–we stayed in a little tiny gnome-sized cottage that had cruiser bikes we could ride around on, passed vineyards we arrived too late to visit (most close by 5 PM supposedly?) and mountains that are just covered with this green-gold haze that made us want to take a thousand tourist photos.
We had a quiet picnic, and the next day we ran through Calistoga (I planned on running in every town we stayed in, but I sort of got lazy and gave up after we left Napa) and then took off to have breakfast at Bouchon Bakery in Yountville. Francesca suggested it to me and said it was one of her favorite places to eat in California, and I can see why. I had a banana nut muffin that was miles better than any other banana muffin I’ve had, and now that I’m home I just want to recreate it.
Then we wandered around the town a bit (it was quiet and clean and flower-filled and not-too-hot at all) and left for San Francisco. But I’ll write about that one later.

Here’s my last guest post on the Minkette blog . . . I’ll keep this short because we’re in a rush to travel down the coast to get to Hearst Castle (fingers crossed!). We’ve been taking a ton of photos and have visited some great spots in California already, so I promise I’ll be getting better at vacation posting, but right now, I’m sort of in vacation mode . . . .

I meant to host a giveaway to celebrate my store’s switchover to Etsy, but somehow I forgot until this little bag came along. It’s from the ’90s and it’s so perfect that I’m having a hard time not keeping it myself–it’s oatmeal-colored, small, subtle, and it has two drawstrings that you can wear slung over one shoulder or two, ’90s backpack style.
To enter just leave a comment–it can be random, or maybe you can tell me something you’d like to see in the store for the new season.
OK, some random stuff:
1. A pal from Chicago, Leilani, is entering the Mad Men contest–she took photos in front of the extra ’60s Marina City Towers that make me miss Chicago like anything. You should check out her photos, and you can vote for her here.
2. I’ll be out of town for a week! Tonight I’m going to Nashville to see Lauren before Drew and I fly out to California tomorrow. I’m sure there’ll be lots of posts. And just a reminder that the Etsy shop will still be open. Everything will just be sent out as soon as I get back on Monday.
3. I’ll probably keep the giveaway open all week too, so keep your comments coming, and good luck, and have a great weekend!

As you can see a few fall things are slowly making their way into the store . . . Expect lots more when I come back from my trip! It doesn’t feel like fall one bit here in Atlanta and won’t for a while, but right now it’s hard to resist a good sweater or jacket when I see it on the racks.
Just to let you know I’ll be going out of town Saturday; my store will still be open all week but things bought when I’m gone will be sent out as soon as I get back on the following Monday. But I’ll be available ’till this Saturday to ship things out, so if you have your eye on anything and need it in a hurry, be sure to get your order in by Saturday morning!
