While I was planning for our trip I was checking Weather.com obsessively each day to see what the temperatures would be in every place we visited, and 60 degree forecasts got me excited about fall-style outfit packing. So basically I packed tights and sweaters and boots, only to get to San Francisco to be greeted by a freak heatwave. More on that tomorrow.

So I ended up wearing the couple of sun dresses I brought over and over again, and I also ended up looking to Australian labels for spring/summer inspiration once more. If I could have magically packed a few skirts and dresses from Sydney label Secret Squirrel’s new collection my California wardrobe would have been lots more exciting; those mini dresses and silk blouses and perfect long skirts?  I wore a silk blouse and long skirt when I went to LA–I thought it was a great outfit until I saw the tourist photos.  I still have to learn the trick of making long skirt outfits look all right, but at least this collection gives me some hope.

I keep seeing look-a-likes of the first and second-last dress. It’s killing me!

I love the little white layered dress and the rest look lovely in the pics….but I fear I would have the same problem with a long skirt and blouse…just wouldn’t look right on me.

Isn’t that funny how weather always tricks you like that? I swear, every time I go some place I’m checking the weather forecast until the last moment, and then when we arrive it’s always done something to mess up my planned outfits. ;) rofl.

Love these inspirations! I’m really excited to see more and more longer skirts making appearances; I’ve never been much of a mini skirt gal (just don’t have the legs for it! ;) , and its fun to see styling for lengths I’m more comfortable wearing. Though I’m drawn most to the last outfit (short navy pleated skirt/cream blouse)…

Yes, messed up weather forecasts are the worst! In the south it seems more reliable for some reason, but in California it was really all over the place.

Thanks for sharing the collection. You always share the nicest and simplest ones. The label name is kind of adorable!

ps. were you the one who was so enthused by thomas merton? i can’t remember if it was you or your sister… anyhow, i’ve discovered him, and he’s wonderful!

    • Rhiannon says:

Maud, I’m so glad! So honestly I never got through any of his books .. . .reading them is kind of like reading Proust for me . .. I love the books at first but don’t have the mental capabilities to follow through. I’m so glad you like his books though. There’s a documentary on him right now on Netflix instant watch that’s really good.

Rhiannon! We’ve finally, almost got that old zine finished, so I put the interview up on my blog in anticipation. I hope that is OK :) I really love the first dress… you set me on a blue dress craze way back when you posted that blue dress outfit you wore to easter!

It was a very exciting day indeed when I looked on my favourite blog to see the place where I spend my days, surrounded by their pretty clothes. The new collection is so beautiful!

I usually love your taste but I think that Secret Squirrel spends too much time copying original designers like Karen Walker and Lover. So it always makes it hard for me to like their stuff, its like those labels do something and then SS do it the next season. With soooooo many labels out there now, Id rather be loyal to the originals. x

  16. Jennifer says:

    LOVE all the clothes…

  17. Oh, sorry your packing didn’t work out so well… I’m hoping I won’t have the same problem when I go to Texas (I’m leaving in just under 12 hours and I haven’t even begun packing!)

I love this lookbook! Especially that last black dress on the left.
