Inspiration: 1970s Desert Towns

I fell in love with the new Orla Kiely campaign the moment I saw it and I thought it had something to do with the fact that it was styled by Leith Clark and photographed by Venetia Scott.  Well, that’s a lot of it.  But then I realized that it kind of reminds me of the film 3 Women, which was a big inspiration to me last spring.  Last spring I wanted to dress in light-colored ’70s-ish dresses and sandals, and then in the summer when we went to Palm Springs I got excited because that’s where 3 Women was filmed.

These Orla Kiely photos are making me not only want to wear sundresses and sandals–they’re also making me want to go back to the desert.  When we went to Palm Springs I loved it but got sick and couldn’t go to Joshua Tree, so going back is a must.  Even though these aren’t exactly Joshua Tree hiking outfits, I think they look pretty perfect for sitting by the pool or walking downtown Palm Springs under the palm trees and the misters.

Pretend Outfits for Early Spring

We just planned out a last-minute trip to see my family in Tennessee this weekend, and whenever we go on trips I just want to plan up a bunch of outfits to pack.  Especially this weekend–we’ve been having an early spring, and I don’t think it will last, but this weekend it will almost be 70 degrees, and I want to take advantage of it with spring-like outfits.  Will I be wearing anything from these collages?  Sadly no!  But I have two more thrift store-shopping days before we leave, so I’m crossing my fingers I’ll find a few perfect sun dresses, maybe another summer bag (so you guys won’t get sick of the straw one I’ve been carrying every day), and of course that elusive calf-length pleated skirt I just can’t find.

sQ’s Wild Horses

A short and sweet collection from Australia, the My Pet Square team’s Wild Horses is the sort of thing that makes me glad I’m styling a shoot.  I’d never be able to pull these clothes off myself–leather shorts just won’t work on me no matter how much I’d like them to.  But the shoot I’m working on is definitely Australian/New Zealand collection-inspired, and the model we’re dressing, an Alexa Chung-haired girl from Chicago, would look great in every one of these outfits.

But that isn’t to say I won’t try to take an idea or two from this collection for spring.  I love the sheer blouses and the lace, and that last maxi dress is pretty perfect as far as maxi dresses go.  Also, the shoes!  But I’m pretty much a sucker for any strappy platform with a wooden heel.

At the Capitol

Photos by Drew

Dress: gift from Vivetta
Shoes: Jeffrey Campbell

Last Thursday I had to go to downtown Atlanta to renew my license tag, and I was nervous because I was late in renewing it and because I always get nervous about going to DMV-type places, but everything turned out fine, and it was sunny, and I got to go to a new-to-me part of town to boot.  Well, I mean I had driven around the place before and had seen the Capitol building, though mostly in pictures on the Atlanta Time Machine. So on Saturday when we had more time I went back with Drew.  It was good to park across the street at another building I had never seen in person, the old ’30s deco city hall. You can see the top of it in that sunflare photo.  One of these days I’ll go back and take some more pictures of it because it’s perfect and probably my favorite building in Atlanta.

Drew shot these on his old film camera.  This Vivetta dress is kind of 1960s, and I wanted pictures that looked a little like Lartigue’s ’60s ones, with lots of film grain and some fuzziness.  That was on Saturday–our weekend was pretty busy but I can’t remember too much from it.  Jamie and I did a ton of planning for a photoshoot we have coming up next Monday, so right now summery outfits are about all I can think of–I think last night I dreamt about which shoes to pick.  And tonight we boycotted Valentine’s Day and had a RuPaul’s Drag Race/ photoshoot outfit shopping party instead, because when it comes right down to it Valentine’s Day is kind of silly, and also Chloe Sevigny was a guest judge on the show.

Sixties Lartigue

I checked out this great big book on photographer J.H. Lartigue for his early 20th century stuff.  I wanted to see more of his 1920s-ish autochromes and his ’30s photos of Renee Perle and all those amazing photos of people being lazy on the Riviera in the ’30s and ’40s.  I had seen those all before floating about online, but I never saw any of his pictures from the ’60s or even knew that he was taking them so late in his career.  For some reason I like the idea of someone who took pretty, soft-focus autochromes in the first half of the century taking fashion-y street style-ish photos of girls in the swinging sixties.
