Summer 2011 Lookbook Video

I can’t say thank you enough for all your comments and re-posts and good wishes about the store. This whole thing was such a nerve-wracking venture, and after we launched the store the other night I couldn’t sleep.  I was too excited and also pretty nervous.  So I’m just glad to hear people like the it.  Honestly I just lucked out by getting to work with great people–Tayla and her modeling, Jamie and her photos, Drew and his site design and video . . .

I love the video too much not to post, so here it is, just in case you haven’t seen it.  It was so much fun having Drew come along on a shoot and watching him and Jamie set up scenes.  That first one was shot right on top of Stone Mountain, where it was magical with the mist rolling by, but also so cold that poor Tayla had to wrap up in a blanket in between shots.  Fortunately it got warmer a little later on, though it never did end up feeling like summer.

Today Jamie and I will be packing up orders and taking a trip to the post office.  I forgot to mention it, but our store offers free shipping for all US orders $150 and up, and free international shipping on orders $250 and up.  Everything goes Priority Mail because it’s good and fast and because I swore by it during my Ebay/Etsy days, and if you need anything in a hurry we can work with you for sure.

Thanks again!

Introducing Silent Sundays

Do you remember those behind-the-scenes photos I posted around a month ago and how I was kind of vague and cryptic about the whole thing and promised to write about it later?  Well here goes . . .

My best pal Jamie Hopper and I  have opened up an online shop together called Silent Sundays. The whole thing came about months ago when I was at my parents’ house and my dad told me I should just go ahead and make my own store.  It seemed crazy then and I think I laughed, but Drew talked the idea up, and then I got Jamie on board, and suddenly it didn’t seem quite so overwhelming anymore.

I loved selling vintage on Ebay and Etsy, but after 5 (I think?) years of selling full-time I got burnt out and needed a change.  Not to mention the fact that I was getting more and more interested in newer lines.  So Silent Sundays will be a mix of vintage and new and all the things we love best.  Right now we have lots of vintage, as well as some dresses from T.B.A., Family Affairs, and Secret Squirrel.  And hopefully more lines soon!

The site is officially up as of today, and you can check out the lookbook photos that Jamie shot and the video that Drew made.  I lucked out getting to work with them, and we all lucked out getting to have Tayla Lowe model for us.  She has modeled all over the world and has even appeared in a Lula editorial, but is the nicest, most down-to-earth person.  You can read more about all of that on the store blog we’ll be keeping.

OK, hope you like it!

Juliette Hogan S/S 2012

I can’t tell you how much I love the fact that Australian and New Zealand designers are on to releasing their spring 2011/2012 collections. It’s a much-needed second burst of warm weather inspiration, just before summer hits (and you know, once summer hits Atlanta I’ll be needing all the inspiration I can get . . . ).  Juliette Hogan is a favorite of mine, and her spring collection has bits of everything I love about her clothes: ladylike influences, pale colors, perfect floral prints, floaty dresses . . .  I like the inclusion of materials like leather and lace and the ideal summer silk blouses and dresses that are pretty much necessary in southern hemipshere (or southern USA) summers.

PS, thanks for all the entries so far in the Secret Squirrel Giveaway!  You guys are too nice–again, to enter you can just say what you like about Secret Squirrel or their collection, but I won’t lie and say that your nice comments haven’t made my week.  So thank you!  And for those of you who haven’t entered you have until May 30th to get in on the chance to win $300 to spend at Secret Squirrel.

Photos by Drew

This is my biggest giveaway yet, and probably the most exciting since I’m teaming up with one of my very favorite labels.  I talk about Secret Squirrel a lot here, not just because it’s an Australian label, but because it’s an Australian label that makes all the clothes I like best.  I’m still getting inspiration from their winter collection–there’s plenty of stuff in it for northern hemisphere summers.  In these photos I’m wearing the Counting Stars dress and was supposed to style it in a cold weather way, so I just threw on my winter standby black tights and the Madewell boots I always wear, and I was set.  To top it all off Atlanta has been on the cold side lately, so it almost does feel like fall, and I’m sort of confused about seasons again.  You can see the rest of these photos and a little interview with me on the Secret Squirrel blog.

Anyway, Secret Squirrel is giving away one $300 (AUD) voucher to spend on anything in their online store to one lucky winner.  All you have to do is go on Secret Squirrel’s Facebook page and “like” the batch of these photos and write on the wall why you like them (or honestly you can just say why you like the dress or why you like Secret Squirrel–just make sure to mention that you’re entering the contest).  They’ll be announcing the winner on Facebook and Twitter on May 30th.  Good luck!!!

My favorite things in the Secret Squirrel store: the Reckoner dress and the About a Girl Maxi.

Between Wind and Water

When I first saw the photos in Hound’s spring lookbook they reminded me of childhood summers spent in lakeside cabins in Wisconsin, which I thought was probably not exactly the location they were going for.  But then I saw that Hound is based in Chicago, and that they did shoot in Wisconsin (Camp Wandawega, the vacation wonderland!), which of course is guarantied to make me like it more.  Childhood memories aside I love the photos and I love the clothes.  They’re simpler than the sorts I usually wear, but I think that’s good since I’ve been wanting to go more minimalist lately anyway.
