My Brilliant Career

I first heard about the Australian film My Brilliant Career when Siri did a post on it, but I guess I forgot about it until last week when I was looking through Netflix Instant Watch movies and came across it.  I’m glad I watched it, because it’s a cheerful one and these days I need all the cheering up I can get  (mostly I seem to watch things that are sad, including an American Experience documentary on the Triangle Shirtwaist Fire, and this probably isn’t helping me any).  Siri said that Sybylla (the movie’s heroine, played by Judy Davis) reminded her of Anne of Green Gables, and it was the first thing I thought of when I was watching.  When I was a kid I fell in love with the Anne of Green Gables films, and I have a feeling I would have loved this one too, with its beautiful Australian backdrops and turn of the century interiors.  I would have loved Sybylla with all her spirit and independence and tomboyish charm that no amount of white lace dresses or parasols or boater hats can hide.  And all of those clothes?  They’re a pretty good reason for watching too.

oh pretty, it looks a lot like anne of green gables. Personally I would love to make a new anne of green gables myself so I’ll have to watch this one.

Oh I loved this movie! I’m so glad you made a post about it. The Australian backdrops in and of themselves are so inspiring. It was so beautifully shot, as so many period movies made during the 1970s seem to be. I definitely see the Anne of Green Gables comparison. I loved the clothes, too!

Wow, I will definitely have to watch this one because it is rare that I see my own backyard in a film! I too used to love Anne of Green Gables as a child (both the films and the books) and at the moment I am really taken by Downton Abbey.

I highly recommend you watch Picnic at Hanging Rock – hauntingly beautiful with Australian bush scenery and set in 1901 with lovely dresses!
