Boulevard Baby

And the good New Zealand labels keep on coming!  Celine Rita is a new-to-me label from New Zealand run by Celine Chapman, who was kind enough to send me these images as well as a press release from her summer 2011/12 collection.  It’s called Boulevard Baby, and it’s inspired by both 1990s sitcoms and the California coast, which are pretty great as far as inspirations go.  There is something so good and vacation-y about these clothes—there are dresses that look perfect for throwing over bathing suits, seaside walk sun dresses, and then the perfect little black dresses for concerts.

Mailbox

Our mailman usually comes around the time I’m eating breakfast, which is, uh, around noon.  I’m slow.  Being housebound makes it especially exciting to get mail, unless it’s all bills or junkmail (of course).  Getting magazines I subscribe to or Urban Outfitters catalogs is pretty fun.  And getting unexpected things is even more fun.

1. Bullett Magazine.  I fell in love with their Lea Seydoux issue, so when Aimee at Bullett wrote and asked if I’d like a copy of their summer issue I said yes!  It came a few weeks later, the day after surgery, and couldn’t have come at a better time.  I still haven’t gone through the whole thing yet, but right now my favorite thing in it is the editorial by Eliot Lee Hazel that’s shot in the desert.

2.  Today I got a little care package from Lauren and Neil.  There were lots of good things, including some amazing Nashville-made Olive and Sinclair chocolate and some coffee that Neil roasted himself.

3.  After I broke my arm my mom and dad sent me a copy of Gone, the book I really wanted and wrote about a few weeks ago.  It’s beautiful, and there are lots of photos in it that I’ve never seen before, and I still need to get around to reading the Shelby Foote novella.

4.  A pretty little haircomb that Lauren made, and a pair of sunglasses I bought online last week.  They were cheap (Cheap Monday) and cat-eye, and hopefully now I won’t wear the same pair of sunglasses in every blog post.

5.  This was delivered by hand, really.  Our friends Zack and Lauren brought over a big bag of fruit that I’ve already mostly eaten, and Zack made this get-well card.  I wish this is how I really broke my arm.

I’m doing ok today.  On Monday I was feeling pretty great and even made a batch of muffins all by myself.  On Tuesday I was planning on going to thrift stores with Jamie and was so excited about it that I couldn’t stop talking about it, but I guess I jinxed myself because I came down with a migraine and was stuck in bed the whole day.  At least I got to finish Downton Abbey  and got plenty of rest.  Today I’m feeling better, and tomorrow we have a make-up thrift store trip planned, so here’s hoping . . .

Post-surgery Weekend

I think it might be a little silly that we did an outfit post two days after surgery, but today I was really itching to get outside after being stuck in the house this weekend.  The surgery went really well.  I didn’t know how nervous I was until Friday morning when we were on our way to the outpatient center, and I was jumpy and felt nauseous.  I pretty much felt the same way in the waiting room; they were playing those terrible doctor-related show that really are all about plastic surgery, so that didn’t help any.  Once I was in the pre-op room and got my iv I was feeling better.  All the nurses were extra nice and joke-y, and once they start putting stuff in your iv to calm you down there’s not much on earth that could worry you.  The anesthesia was just as wonderful as I remembered–just a drop of it (that I can remember at least) and I was out under the warm lights, with a bunch of reassuringly happy nurses making jokes around me.

Waking up is scarier–especially after I had my bed pushed to the post-op room and felt so hot all of a sudden that I tried to take all my blankets and my funny surgery socks off.  The pain in my arm was pretty terrible too, but as soon as the nurse started giving me more medications I started feeling a lot calmer, and it was so hard keeping my eyes open.  But soon enough the nurse was pushing me in a wheelchair out to Drew’s car, and even with Atlanta stop and go traffic the ride home wasn’t that bad.

I spent this whole weekend resting–probably mostly sleeping.  I’ve been getting pretty bad headaches that a lot of times hurt more than my elbow, so when they come along I drink Coke for the caffeine (I love coffee more but it’s hard to drink when I don’t feel well) and take one of the giant Ibuprofens the doctor gave me.  The I go downstairs and sleep.  Also I’ve totally been watching lots of Netflix like you all told me too–it’s kind of fun to have all the time in the world to get lost in a series,  and right now I’m watching Downton Abbey and am four episodes in, with plenty of time to finish.  I’ve been reading a little and also have been going online, even though the internet world just makes me wish I were up and at it again.  I miss thrift stores and Silent Sundays planning, though hopefully Jamie and I can get back into it soon.

Today was nice though, so Drew and I made a quick trip to get frozen yogurt at Yoforia.  I figure that as long as my bones are on the mend I’ll be needing lots of calcium, right?  After that we walked around Westside Provisions.  I wore this new Dear Creatures dress I got from Modcloth a few weeks ago, that I’ll definitely be wearing on my blog again since it’s a perfect summer dress and since my funny sling and scary swollen hand don’t do it justice at all.

Madame Hawke S/S 12

This week’s New Zealand collection is ’90s-inspired like my favorites of them seem to be.  But Madame Hawke’s spring collection is definitely more minimalist-inspired than grunge.  It is much more simple than daring, with its no-frills dresses and utilitarian trenches.  Is it bad that my favorite things about it are the model and the Alexa Chung-esque sandals?  The clothes are great and all, but, ooh, those sandals . . . .

I go into surgery Friday morning.  I’ll let you all know how it goes!  Since last weekend my outlook’s improved a bit so I’m hoping to have the regular old outfit posts and maybe even day trips in the near future.
