Alexa Chung for Madewell, A/W 11

I was crossing my fingers that the Alexa Chung for Madewell images would be released before the collection’s official opening day, if only so I have an idea of what to look out for, so I’m so excited to have come across some of them on the Alexa Chung tumblr.  Our local Madewell is having an opening party, which I may or may not go to; these things are always so awkward for me, but then again I’m so curious that I’ll probably end up going, even if there isn’t free wine like there was at our local Free People’s opening party, ahem.  I’m sure there will be crowds and I’m sure my brain won’t be working as well as it should be (I get overwhelmed easily), so to be on the safe side here’s a list of the things I’ll be on the lookout for:  lace dresses, that silk polka dot blouse I saw in the video but don’t see here, the floral sheer blouse, and those plaid dresses–I like the green one, but love what I can see of the black and white one.  The palm tree prints aren’t really calling my name, but you never know–in person they might be wonderful.

Yes! I forgot to include that one . . . I love the shape of it but think it might be one of those things that look amazing on Alexa but frumpy on me. It’s definitely worth the drive. : )

Sigh. I wonder if Madewell would ever ship to Australia?
I love the simple shapes and lines of her designs, although I suppose they do lend themselves to a certain shape of girl.
Neat grey sweaters will always be something I’m drawn to!

Hello, very long time since I wrote here!
I just felt compelled to say I feel some slight disappointment with Chung’s collection. I loved the dresses from last year and the bat tshirt and the gorgeous shorts and I was so annoyed Madewell doesn’t seem to exist/ship here for me to buy it, you would have thought they’d make an exception this one time for England considering she’s English (wishful thinking!).. anyway, the cardigan just looks a straight rip-off from Chanel which you could find in most shops, the jeans look standard Topshop and the prints on the navy remind me of a certain fox print number she wore a few months back (I wish I could give you the link but my internet’s terrible today & I’m sure you know what I mean).
I know that she does this collection based on the way she dresses etc, but to me there only seems to be a few stand out pieces that you would see on someone and instantly recognise as being from that collection, ie the lovely drawn tshirt and possible the coats, although to me they look as though they could also be from TBA. For the market they’re aiming at, young 20/30 somethings, I don’t think, as a collection, it’s special enough for the price they’re asking.
    Sorry, rant over.

    PS lovely blog, as always!xx

Yeah, I don’t like it nearly as much as the last one, but I think maybe it’s because I liked Alexa’s style better in those days? I bet she designed the first Madewell collection when she was living in New York and hosting that MTV show, and that was my favorite style period of hers by far. The styling was so good in that collection. This one is more tough and grunge. The palm tree prints lose me completely, but then again I love a few things: the floral blouse, the fitted sweaters, the white plaid dress . . .

man i wish more than anything that this collection shipped to the uk – seems totally silly seeing as she’s the epitome of british style, we’d be eating it up!

I know! I’m still so confused by that. Doesn’t J Crew ship to the UK? It’s so strange that Madewell wouldn’t ship outside the states.

I agree with Fern – I was in love with her last collection, and apart from a few pieces like the gold lace top and the check dress, it all looks a bit cheap and something you could buy anywhere.

Yeah . . . Madewell stuff is usually pretty good quality and I’m sure this will be too, but then again I know that they’ll up the prices of everything. I’m just hoping that some of it will go on sale at our local store, like it did last time around.

Alexa’s style really shines threw, I adore the blue dress with palms and the grey sweater with a cute black skirt. Thanks for the post.

The thing is, to the commenters above, I feel that most designers these days aren’t really THAT original in the first place. Things that TBA and other brands might have, have already been done similarly before. I just think that it doesn’t always have to be brand spankin’ new to be great. I tend to go for classic pieces with maybe a slight difference. It always depends. I think it’s still a nice collection. When you put pieces together, that’s when YOU make them original.

Yeah, that’s really true . . . . Also you kind of expect that with celebrity lines—they’re not really meant to be ground-breaking. Wasn’t Kate Moss “inspired” by a lot of her vintage ’70s British designer pieces when she did her line for Topshop? It seems like the whole point of a celebrity line is to capture the essence of that person’s style and put it into a collection that lots of people can buy. Last time around I got the Alexa Chung for Madewell velvet peter pan collar dress that was kind of like Charles Anastase’s stuff, but I love it and wear it all the time.

Anne, I completely agree, however for them to come out under Alexa’s name, as if to associate them with something WOW, I don’t think they fit the bill

Oh, these are perfect! Especially the three in the second picture.
No none of the things are really groundbreaking but I agree with you that they don’t need to be. The collection just looks really wearable and nice and it’s very much Alexa Chung’s style.

Yeah I have to agree with Fern, especially about the blatently Chanel jacket. You expect H&M, Aldo, etc. to rip off high-end designs because their whole m.o. is to bring stuff to mass market. But it seems a little weird to launch that kind of thing under a special, named brand.

I remember a similar discussion when Sea of Shoes girl had a “line” for Urban Outfitters that could basically be summed up as “here are some knockoffs of stuff from my closet.”

this is a VERY average collection. It’s a pity, I used to really like chung back in the popworld days of tea dresses and converse and sonic youth t-shirts. this looked like she walked around h&m, topshop and urban outfitters and picked out a few pieces and thrown them together in a collection under her name. Hope it goes well for her, I’m sure it will; there are a group of teenage girls who will see the name ‘alexa chung’ and instantly buy it
